Fashion Trend: All About the Cape

October 14, 2010

The weather is slowly starting to cool- but not cold enough for those gorgeous layered coats just yet. In my search to keep comfortable against the breeze and keep a fashionable attire I have discovered the cape!

There are some gorgeous capes out there- and not your traditional blocking shape. With the right material and design you can create fabulous looks that are sure to gain attention. Because we are talking about a big space of fabric- keep sheer in mind. This one in particular is an oversized chiffon cardigan from STAR.MIMI on yesstyle.com and though directly on seems solid- with a little sunlight behind you your silhouette shines through as the wind keeps the fabric moving. I love it!

It is probably meant to be worn symmetrically but I like wearing it off the shoulder to give it more shape and interest. But that just means it is open to possibilities. Mix in some cool leggings or some long necklaces. Go at it and make it your own. I have my eye on same lace capes, too, with beautiful collars.

No more does a cape have to be a boring solid block of fabric. It’s gone inventive and is creating to die for styles.

I’m anxious for my next cape! Hopefully I can even find one with an oversized hood, I think that would be fabulous. It is so feminine and the volume of fabric is is sultry when done correctly. The cape has a personality for everyone- from sexy, chic, and feminine to cutsie adorable. You can even mix in a level of grunge to the matter.

How will you make the cape look your own?

Casual Chic

September 12, 2010

As a dress and heels kinda girl, when it comes to dressing “casual” I have to find a way to make it interesting for my own sake. The direction I like to go in for the most part has to do with playing with lines and in particular:  silhouettes and volume.

For instance, take this look here:

A blue and white striped casual pattern on a shirt- but not just any typical shirt. A shirt with dolman sleeves! I like the contrast of the big volume you have up top paired with fitted short beige shorts. Neutral tones, but a very different and unique style. This particular top is from I’Miusa which I found on yesstyle.com and has optional buttons on the back. This allows for a more fitted waist, but I like the billowing volume. If I was wearing a skirt or pleated shorts I may consider tightening the middle, but for now I’m enjoying the big volume up top and the tight slender lines at the bottom.

Since I was wearing beige shorts, I also decided to bring out my KVOLL boots for perfect match and an added edge factor. To soften the look and keep things “chic” I wore my new necklace from MyLittleThing also found on yesstyle.com. MyLittleThing makes a lot of delicate feminine pieces that have an old almost vintage kind of look and feel to them. I love the charm these accessories bring to an outfit. This one is a white beaded strand which holds a key and clock charm- adorable!

So adorable it inspired me to bring my bangs to the side and curl my hair (a softer look since my straight hair and bangs can be harsh- a good fashion harsh but just not what I am looking for in this style). I decided to take some photos while driving about town (as a passenger) with my new phone camera:

Video: Putting the Jump into Jumpsuit

August 31, 2010

I had the fortune of doing a shoot with the *amazing* Nicholas Gordon of Styx Photography “SP” and create a series of stop motion short films. It just so happens I am wearing my favorite new jumpsuit, so you can really see it in motion!

Nicholas is incredible to work with;  thank you, Nicholas, for an amazing shoot! I am excited to be able to share our work with you!

As a dress and heels kinda lady you will rarely see me in pants, but lately I’ve fallen for the jumpsuit. Not just any jumpsuit of course… style and form are still important. But what I do like is the strapless jumpsuit design- fitted on top, loose and flowy on the pants portion then tight again at the knee to create a nice little balloon.

Next? Add prints! You can never go wrong with the classic black.. but a print changes it completely. It is fun, interesting, and unique. This one hear is a lace print (black and white is still a classic) from designer ZOO of yesstyle.com.

I have my eyes on some other prints, including floral and even zebra. Hint- do a search for “jumpsuit” and see how many different styles come up. There is truly something for every personality. I love it. It is comfortable and with the print, so chic.

Zipper Envy

August 21, 2010

One of my latest fashion finds is full of zipper envy. The detail of design with hints of mesh and sheer glittering material is beautiful. I’ve seen zipper creep into interesting and stylish designs with shoes and pockets, but nothing like this one. Take a look at this rosette collar design with zipper detail from Tian Mu.

..and some pictures via my new phone- you know my cats like to get in the photos, it is bound to happen! ha..

Tian Mu has been a name I find myself constantly check in for on YESSTYLE. Everything I have gotten from them so far has been fabulous, and I am eager to see their new and interesting designs. One of their newest items I have my eye on is this gorgeous lace cape (you know I love lace- so elegant with so much room to play):

I am in love with the concept. The ruffles at the bottom are glamorous and flirty. How great would this be going out for cocktails or a nice dinner? It may not keep you warm, but it will keep you looking fabulous.

In the mean time I am enjoying my zipper envy fashion. I think the dress looks great on its own, a bit more dressed up with tights, or dressed down with some skinny jeans. You don’t really need too many accessories with a piece like this, maybe just a giant ring for fun. I wouldn’t put a necklace on though as it could be too busy. The collar states enough. Mesh and sheer fabrics are making a presence- are you finding them in your wardrobe for this fall and winter?

Look For Fall: Mesh Details

July 24, 2010

Mesh is making a presence as fall arrives around the corner. You are starting to see it as a detail in accessories- from shoes, shirts, dresses, skirts, and more. It gives a new texture and feel to your style. Mesh is a funny material and can be a big hit or miss depending on how it is worn. We want to use the texture and add some contrast all while keeping things glamorous and pretty.

KVOLL Shoes: Lace-Up Tulle Overlay Pumps

from yesstyle.com

In these shoes from KVOLL on YESSTYLE.com, we have a nice soft beige contrasting against the black mesh bunched around the ankle. This gives an otherwise soft toned shoe some edge. Mesh can bring items from simple to fierce.

I’m really starting to fall for Kvoll, their shoes are inexpensive and incredibly fun and interesting. For the price, I am quite surprised at the comfort of these heels.. they fit like a glove and are soft to the touch.

The details don’t stop with the mesh, either. We also have the large eyelet rings bringing another element of beige against the black via the lace. I love the way it looks against the skin, it stands out so nicely! This could give a summer dress some rock glamor.

At the bottom of the shoe we see a sparkling covered platform- not over done but definitely a wow factor. These are some killer rocking heels at under $50. I’m loving them.

And I’m enjoying the idea of playing with mesh and tulle a lot more. You are starting to see it creep into the details of our dresses, ruffles, and shirts. It is like a new alternative to lace.. but instead of dainty more of an edgey appeal. Think more sexy than cute. I have my eye on some mesh dresses and one pieces, mixed in with body suits for interesting designs. I’m looking forward to where these designs take us, but for now I’m enjoying my heels.

Black + White + Lace= Darling!

July 10, 2010

Lace is darling on its own, but somehow when you bring in the black and white combination it takes on a different level. This is my latest cocktail dress from yesstyle.com. When I saw it online I thought it was cute, but then when it arrived in person I thought it was even better! I love this little dress.. so simple but just so darling!

SLEEVELESS LACE LAYERED DRESS from TOKYO FASHION

on yesstyle.com

I wanted a cocktail dress that I could also wear during the day pretty casually. A lot of times when we think cocktail dress we think pairing our little black dresses with darker shades of make up and shoes, but with neutral tones being so in I thought I would run with it. So instead of the red or burgundy lips, smokey eye, and black pumps…

…how about a nude to soft pink lip, soft beige shadow on the eye, and illuminating touch of pink on the cheeks? Keep your shoes nude or white and suddenly you have a great day look! It translates into the evening beautifully, too. Gotta love black and white. Make it youthful and darling or make it vamp and sexy- your hair, make up, and heels will complete the stage for you.

I was playing around with my hair this morning, ha. The look I ended up going with I forgot to get a photo of, but it is essentially the same you see hear with the braid from the bottom back wrapped around the top of my head acting like a headband. Kind of a dressed up ballerina bun.

There’s so many opportunities with a piece like this. The decor is so detailed and feminine, which is beautiful and soft on its own but can be paired with some rocking boots and accessories for a sharp contrast feel. A cropped jacket would also work lovely. My mind is definitely working and getting lots of inspiration from this piece. I love it. And of course, the fact that it is super comfortable makes it all even easier.

What would you wear with a dress like this? How would you complete the look for your own style?

Fashion In Stripes

June 30, 2010

My latest fun and fabulous find comes from Nabi on yesstyle.com- this stripped and strapless little number is comfortable and sure to get you noticed! A simple fitted design with a layer of movement gives these bold stripes an interesting look and feel.

This is all one piece. The top portion is simple and black, while the bottom plays with thick black and white stripes in different directions. With stripes like these it is easy to make a simple outfit become too busy, so be cautious in your accessories and let this piece stand out on its own. For my shoes, it is tempting to play the stripes theme a bit further, but again we don’t want to go overboard. Since the dress plays with alternating stripe directions, I thought I would incorporate that with my shoes.

They are just black with crossing straps- but against your skin you get the feel of the stripes all over again. This particular pair is from LA FRESHA on yesstyle.com. The stripes are subtle and so it plays to compliment rather than conflict. Truth be told you could even take this dress to another level with some hot colored shoes. Black and white gives you room to add a splash of color- in your shoes or on your lips. You could maybe even add a bold red belt with this one and make it your own!

Stripes are interesting, with only two tones they make such a bold pattern which attracts the eyes. Stripes that are vertical are great for lengthening your frame, as in the case with this dress. The main direction of the stripes are up and down, with the second layer just slightly going at a diagonal depending on your movement. This is clever as horizontal stripes can make you look wider than you are and shorten your frame.

But this fun little number does it just right! There are so many opportunities with this dress- how would you make this one match your own style? Would you add color, a belt, or play up the accessories? Leave a comment- I would love to see your ideas!

PS: for kicks and giggles.. this piece is very mod to me, but I cannot help wanting to also say Beatlejuice, lol. Love it ;D

Shoe Lust: Heels To Fall For

May 6, 2010

I’ve been doing a little window shopping which somehow always leads me to finding new shoes. Ones to dream about, ones to match dresses to, and then ones that amaze you in price. At least that has been the case for me. Wow, have I found some killer heels that are no-guilt when it comes to meeting your budget!

FIRST: The Under $50

KVOLL is a brand that is new to me on yesstyle.com. I just ordered a pair (not pictured here, I want to surprise you when they come in!) to get a feel for their style and quality. Now, for the price they are currently listed at… it is pretty impossible to resist. They are adorable! I’ll let you know what I think once my shoes arrive. Right now, I’m just excited about the look of them.

You can find out more about each shoe pictured in this post by clicking the image of the shoe. Prices are always subject to change but at the time of writing this post, the two shown above are only $35. Yep!

COCOEVE is a brand I have purchased from in the past with wonderful results. Their darling and fashion forward designs have always caught the attention of shoe admirers when I am wearing them. The shoes pictured just above and below are both from Cocoeve. Aren’t they fabulous?

The ones above are prefect for any occasion, and the gold chains add an extra fabulous factor. The color tone is soft and elegant, but the design gives it that extra it factor.

The red little darlings below have me going “awe” each time I look at them. I just purchased a darling little red dress and I keep thinking these shoes, with their cute little bow, would be an adorable combination.

Okay! Next up….

The Over $50 and Under $100

Just in the next price level, these are shoes that have that dream-like quality.

MIZ SHOES: First of all, love the color. I’ve been getting more dresses in this exact shade even. The design is dainty and feminine and has that high fashion look. It reminds me of something that would have just stepped off the runway. These are beautiful, and they also come in black. Black may be a classic, but I vote for the color on this one.

STYLEKELLY: Keeping in the feel of spring and summer, these are a pretty and girlie and elegant shoe for any lady of fashion. The ruffles are eye catching but not over the top, and the dainty bow is just precious. I like the color here as it is perfect for the nude and lighter shade dresses. A floral dress could go great here, too. I’m loving the look of these!

LA FRESHA: From pretty and delicate to bold and fierce, these heels let people know you are serious! I have many shoes from LA FRESHA in my closet and wear them regularly-they are comfortable, look fabulous, and so far have been holding up well. I can wear my shoes pretty hard from time to time, so something that can keep up with me is important.

This has a gladiator or armor type look to them. They are unique and definitely statement makers. Color wise they stay to a simple black with gold accents, but look at this design. An elegant toe and then an edgy ankle, what a combination. I really like the way the ankle cuff is large and fitted, but also has a large cut in the back so it doesn’t swallow up your ankle completely. You want the skin to show to keep the form flattering. This is a serious shoe I have my eyes on- love it!

Ah… I love looking at shoes. Well these are the ones giving me new inspirations; I’ll be sharing some of my recent favorites I’ve been wearing with you over the next week. Stay tuned!

The Little Red Dress

May 4, 2010

This spring and summer is all about mixing nudes with a splash of color. The little black dress may be a classic but what about the little red one?

When the design is simple and classic, dare to add some bold color! The trick with color is to find a balance, you don’t want to over do it. Keep the contras in balance with soft natural tones and controlled splashes of color (as in this case, very light clean make up paired with a bold red dress and red lipstick to match).

The same could be done with a pink or yellow, only in the case of yellow keep your lipstick a peachy tone or play with a hot pink. Find your color and go for it with a classic design. This dress pictured here is a pleated tube dress from KENZI on yesstyle.com. You can view more styles from Kenzi on YES STYLE by clicking below.

KENZI

A design so simple that stands out from color gives you a lot of options. On its own it is fabulous, but when you mix in accessories it becomes an entirely new look. This dress can be worn simple for the earlier afternoon, and then can be glamed out in the evening with some black tights, accessories, and an elegant updo. Of course, in all of these styling ideas you must maintain a balance.

For this look, I kept my make up simple with soft skin tones for a glowy and natural look. KATE has some great colors that leave a clean and flawless finish, but also goes on smoothly.

I just started using them recently and have been happy with the results. Sometimes eye shadows are flaky and don’t cover, or worse they cover too much and leave a mess. So far these have been treating me nicely, and it feels light on the skin which I like.

MAKE UP BY KATE

I am going to have to try their lipstick and lip glosses next. I wanted to start with the eye shadows to get a feel for quality and I am thrilled. Their mascara is really nice, too. I’ve been using it for a few weeks. It feels very silky, and though sweat-proof it is designed to come off gently with warm water. That’s something I am pretty cautious of, I don’t like anything too harsh. Even normal waterproof mascara is something I use only when I need to since it is rough on your eyelashes. We’ve got to keep them, soft, luscious, and long after all!
