I ♥ Lace: A Fashion Obsession, Part II

December 27, 2009

The beauty of lace is that there are so many ways to wear it: from accessories like hair decorations, gloves, purses and scarves to dresses and tights making an outfit truly stand out.

In my last lace obsessed post I was playing with the idea of lace tights to add more texture and style to your fashion. With the winter trend of thigh high boots, patten tights fit just right in creating a bold and sexy style.

Black is classic and elegant and works lovely with winter’s charm. Later on in the spring nude and white lace may add a soft but playful factor for us to look forward to. But back to the season at hand and how we can have fun with our style.

I have been experimenting with lace quite a lot lately- and not just how it can redesign shoes. Take for instance using lace as a layer and foundation for your existing wardrobe. A long sleeve laced top goes a long way when worn under the right dress or tank top. It is the perfect selection for updating your entire wardrobe, giving old pieces a new feel in an instant. If you want to take lace even further then consider a piece such as this lucky find: A Lace Trim Jumpsuit from TIAN MU.

What I like about this selection is that not only is it one-of-a-kind, it is also all once piece. Well, one piece save for the black tube top underneath. If you have a unique tank top you can play with the lines of the design even more. But this once piece with the casual shorts and lace collar, front, and sleeves creates a simple look that is not to be ignored.

Because it is a single piece it leaves plenty of room for accessories- from vests to belts to playful jewelry pieces. I like the outfit on its own honestly, but I also look forward to reinventing the look over and over again.  I’ve been thinking of playing with  belts, skinny to “wow” factor big, and different undergarments first. Maybe even a colorful long sleeve top underneath to add a new flair. There’s plenty of ideas available and this very unique outfit will have a different feel each time I wear it because of all these options.

TIAN MU has lots of other great styles which have caught my eye, many of them playing with lace in different ways, too. From baby doll dresses to leggings, there’s lots of great ideas and inspirations to be found.

Volume In Control: A Must Fashion Accessory

August 27, 2009

I love volume, and there is definitely a certain balance to be maintained in order for it to work wonders. There are also many options to be explored, and all of them have to do with playing around with the silhouette.

Dresses are a particular favorite of mine, and those cozy, voluminous, short ones that have been in style are a dream. Nothing like looking fabulous while being comfortable, some of them feel like silk or even as cozy as a blanket. My latest favorite, from STAR.MIMI, feels like silk against the skin. It is soft, delicate, and moves so elegantly. On it’s own, it has a good amount of volume that is in good balance because of the length (pictured above).

But what about those options? Volume is put into control with this must fashion accessory: the cinched waist belt.

Oh, the cinched waist belt, how I heart the many styles you give me. It is simple, yet can drastically change the silhouette and feel of a style. It is also my little cheat into being able to wear those cute tops and dresses that may be otherwise sold out in my size. The belt allows me to make it work- so brilliant.

I also love belts that come with an outfit- and then taking that belt to mix and match with the rest of my wardrobe. Ribbons make a great belt alternative as well. I don’t like letting good packaging go to waste!

A collection of belts leaves lots of room for creativity. And vintage belts are a thing of beauty. A simple top or dress gets a whole new personality in an instant. (Some belts.. especially the chain-like ones… depending on their weight, can also make crazy-awesome necklaces or chokers. Just a thought!)

I love the mix in fabrics on this dress- from incredibly soft cloth to a gorgeous silky shine. Fabulous. Both the STAR.MIMI dress and With Mocha heels are from yesstyle.com, I’m hooked on their products. Beautiful one-of-a-kind fashion that always keeps me in my style. And they have something for every personality and feel.

I Heart Target’s GO International Collection: Gorgeous New Dress!

July 2, 2009

Target continues to give me more reasons to keep visiting, and the fact that my style can grow without spending a fortune is a lovely treat. Many of their new styles look so rich and elegant you would never imagine the tag attached to them, and it doesn’t matter. As long as you look and feel pretty and fabulous then that is all that matters.

I discovered this dress the other day and wow, what a find. I’ll be posting some pictures up here too so you can see the detail-(my camera died on me! Must wait for it to charge) but in the meantime I was able to put up a video so you can get a feel of this glamorous dress!

The material feels like heaven, so light and silky, and moves beautifully with every step. This is something I look for in my clothes. Design plays a lot into how a dress will fit, look, move, and feel. And this one performs beautifully.

Enjoy the video for now, I’ll see if I can update with photos later ;)

Nailene Gives Nails A New Look And Style

June 30, 2009

Having lovely nails is a necessity at all times- whether we are wearing nail polish or not. I know I prefer to have no nail polish over chipped nail polish at any time. Bad nails will ruin any fabulous look in an instant.

I am very grateful to have now discovered Nailene- not only are their products inexpensive but they are for the fashionista on the go. With fabulous press-on nails in beautiful designs, they also have many options for adding your own personal style into the mix. Like for instance, my new favorite toy:

This is the “French Tip Pen” and it comes in two colors- black or white. The beauty of this is how it makes applying a smooth line simple and quick. But do be aware that like anything else it takes some practice with your non dominant hand since it does act like a pen. I know I’ve gotten so used to a brush it took me a moment- but honestly by the second nail I forgot all about it and fell in love once again.

You could actually fill in the entire nail, too, if you wanted. I am going to explore the options available with this incredible tool- polka dots, little designs, stripes- oh so much to explore! A brush cannot give you that kind of flexibility or control. It applies smoothly with no glopping- just clean and beautiful.

Another luxury I have found out about this pen throughout the week is that as my nails do begin to chip, touching up takes seconds! It mixes in flawlessly and I can just fill in to missing pieces without anyone being the wiser. Love it.

If control is an issue for you they also offer these stickers you can put in place to provide a clean line. Just put them into place, swipe away with this nail polish pen- and you have a gorgeous look waiting for you.

The strips are great if you need them, though honestly I like to freehand it as I feel pretty comfortable and in control. It is especially nice, however, when you are in a hurry and don’t want to worry about it. There’s no excuse for bad nails, even on the rush.

I think I may use the stickers for playing with designs- placing them one over the other or next to each other for strips and zig zags. I’ll show you as I experiment and see what comes up.

They have so many fun options to play with, whether you are in a hurry or you have the time to really dress your nails up. I’ve been playing with some of their stickers they also offer- everything from little gems to pretty designs- just place them on the nail, layer a clear coat to keep it clean and in place, and you are done. I’ll give you a sneak peak at some of what I’ve done so far- but much more is to come soon.

Speak with you soon- if you start experimenting with your own ideas be sure to share them, I would love to see them!

A Visit Into Wonderland From Tim Burton

June 23, 2009

All this discussion of cartoons, villains, and characters we’ve loved since childhood always draws me right into wonderland. And with news of Tim Burton’s next movie to be “Wonderland” I felt it a must to bring up.

Now, I have mixed feelings about this honestly. I have a difficult time these days to get excited over any movie… The Dark Knight was the last movie that really delighted the child inside me, keeping true to the integrity of the characters and story. But so many movies these days take classics and “revive” them with a campy unnecessary or just completely wrong twist. My opinion only of course, but I save judgement until after the movie is out and I have seen it. Only then will I know.

In the mean time I will indulge in the photos as I keep a cautious eye and ear in mind. Alice In Wonderland is very dear to me and so I do not want my heart broken.

This movie is to take a different story but with the classic’s tale in mind. In Tim Burton’s wonderland, Alice is 17 years of age and attending a party at a Victorian estate. She soon discovers that she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types, to which she then runs off, following a white rabbit into a hole which returns her to Wonderland. In this film, wonderland is a place she has once visisted 10 years before but does not recall it. I think this allows for more possibilities for Tim Burton to put his own creative take and not disturb the classic. Creating a twist from the story from the beginning leaves some room for freedoms. We shall see how it all comes together in 2010.

Below are some photos courtesy of stylefrizz of Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen.

You can read more about this film from USA Today where they also offer more photos and a panoramic exclusive view into the art concept of Alice In Wonderland.

A Pretty Print For The Shirt-Dress Look

May 27, 2009

Ah, the shirt dress- I admit I have a long, white, otherwise men’s shirt formed into a dress with the help of a belt. But there is so much more possible with the design; take for instance this fabulous print shirt dress, complete with bow and exotic collar.

I discovered this find at TARGET some time ago, and bought the two prints that stood out to me the most. One is pictured here, more unique and different with color and design. The other is your traditional white shirtdress, but with navy pinstripes and a bow like this one.

I like how it has a unique collar to it, too- I have it buttoned up to show the full potential this look offers. It can also remain unbuttoned for a more traditional standard look, but I am enjoying the puffed stylish look today. I definitely wear both, it gives my wardrobe more variety.

The bow is the same way- and I love bows. With the collar up, I wanted to keep the symmetrical feel alive and so I have the bow centered. Normally if the collar were down, I would have the bow off to the side at an angle. It really does change the feel of the dress, funny how the details can do that.

The rich color and print on this dress makes it pop, so I like to keep my accessories simple. Not much is needed here- I am wearing some simple and adorable silver earrings and a collection of silver bangles across my wrist.

I am sporting the pigtails today, it lets me show off the collar of the dress and have the cute look the pig tails provide at the same time. I usually do an updo with this dress, but with the natural curls and waves I’ve been getting from my hair since I saw my stylist earlier this week, I wanted to keep them present. So the pigtails are doing just the thing for me today.

So here’s a new way to spice up the shirt dress look and keep it interesting and feminine! Gotta love the new ideas and inspirations.

Anvil: A Modern Tradition

May 24, 2009

Anvil is what I want and look for in a bar- classic traditional cocktails made by proud and talented bartenders. The look is rustic yet modern with a classic and timeless feel, and the details go far.

Like the glassware for instance- vintage glassware that adds charm to each cocktail that is ordered. Bartenders take pride in their work and create wonderful cocktails you truly can enjoy. The environment is wonderful, as is the staff- welcoming and like a moment of time from the past living here in the now. This is a must indulge for the cocktail admirer, or for anyone looking to relax in a timeless and classic fashion.

The ice is perfect; the crafting of libations are done precisely and elegantly like the art it is. When I first walked in and saw a shelf devoted to bitters I knew I was in the right place.

The bartenders have my respect, I love to let them make the drinks they love and introduce me to new and wonderful drinks. Our bartender kept our orders in mind and recommended new ones for us to try based on the styles we had been enjoying- I love that. The attention to detail and pride is a beautiful balance.

Last night was our first visit, and we were pleased to see a menu of cocktail specials which changed on a daily basis. I started my evening with a cocktail by the name of “Smitten” -how could I pass that up? It consisted of Gin, Campari, Lemon, and mint- very refreshing and very lovely. I could see this one being a marvelous drink by the pool on a warm summer day.

From there I moved on to “The Darb” which was composed of Apricot Brandy, French Vermouth, Gin, and Lemon. A very delicious drink indeed- the apricot brandy gave a nice smooth finish after a crisp and refreshing beginning. The texture of the ice danced perfectly along side it, too.

Now, I was too busy enjoying my first cocktail to take a picture- as was Timothy with his “Sazerac” which composed of Rye, Absinthe, Campari and a lemon twist. Though it looked like a cosmo in appearance, after a quick taste you knew this was no girlie drink. I loved it- but I like a strong drink. Timothy did too, but definitely an interesting drink to start the night with. This was lovely, smooth and with a bite that was pleasant to me, but could be considered harsh to others. I’d have this one later in the evening.

From there, he moved on to the “Negroni” which was composed of Gin, Sweet Vermouth, Campari, and Bitters. Sebastian, our bartender, recommended this one to us off the menu- and what a lovely choice.

It was at this point that we found out how small of a world it is- a we were welcomed by friends who happened to already be there! We were fortunate to taste a grand variety of cocktails between all of us- including a sip of a “Gin Fizz” made to perfection and a “Gin Gin Moscow Mule” that was very refreshing!

As the night progressed we found a new favorite- the “Corn N Oil” which was composed of Blackstrap Rum, Falernum, and Angostura Bitters. This one is *fabulous* and a perfect drink to finish an evening with. I love everything about this drink- and it was made beautifully with the right amount of sweetness, not overpowering in the least. The first sip reminded me of a port , which I love, but in a beautifully crafted cocktail. Definitely a must!

For me, I decided to end the evening with an old treat I used to love having in Miami (this bar was making me feel at home and reminded me of my old home). And so I finished the night with a “Caiprihana”- which I’ve posted on in the past as a love of mine that is refreshing when your sitting by the ocean.

This brazilian cocktail has become more popular across the US which is lovely to see. And being in a place where I had bartenders I could trust, I was very excited to order this drink.

A fabulous end to a remarkable evening. We definintely will be frequenting this treasure of a bar and look forward to the wonderful times ahead.

I am calling it a “Modern Tradition” because it is one of the timeless treasures that needs a modern embrace- and with places such as this one opening, it is a fond piece of history and memories reintroduced to modern times for a new and modern tradition.

Find out more about Anvil at their website: http://www.anvilhouston.com or follow them on twitter via one of the co-owners, @Bobby_Heugel . If you are ever in Houston, this is a must visit wonderland.

A New Kind Of Twist

May 23, 2009

If you enjoyed the different kind of updo from the previous post, you’re going to love this new variation. It uses the same technique revealed in the Grand Collection, taken to a whole other level.

The beauty of this variation, too, is that it works with various lengths of hair. It can look sooo cute with short hair, giving it anywhere from a spunky look to an elegant and chic graceful one. It is all on how you want to play it.

I have long hair, so I let it all just melt together. I think I would add more curls to give it extra body and texture the next time I do this- but it works well with the subtle waves just as well.

For those signed up for The Pretty Society Exclusive Newsletter, you are going to love how simple and quick this look is to do. I’ll be illustrating the step by step instructions on both variations- this one above and the updo from the previous post. I’m loving how elegant and easy these looks are to construct.

And with the variations, there’s room to add your own personality and unique creative touch into the mix- make it your own and rock this look!

Elegance and glamor don’t have to be complicated or time consuming- it is the simple details we do for ourselves that shine the brightest and make a difference.

A Fabulous And “Flipped-Out” Do

May 21, 2009

This is my latest creation in hairstyle updos, and I must admit I am loving it even far more than expected! The idea came to me in an instant and I wasted no time getting to the results.

It is an elegant, chic, bold and definitely “flipped-out” do-and surprisingly simple and quick to do. I cannot wait to experiment further with it as there are so many options available. My hair is long, but there are still great possibilities for those with medium length hair as well. It works.

I’ll be featuring the step by step illustration of how to do this magnificent do in my next month’s issue of “The Pretty Society Exclusive Newsletter“- along with other great insights on food, beauty, wine, and more. I like to keep things interesting, and this will be a special issue to love.

I’ve been enjoying this look all day, and it has been holding well. From running errands to even sitting by the pool for bit this afternoon- I’ve been able to go from one place and outfit to another without the slightest hesitation. And the glamor is very present and strong with this look- it feels so fabulous!

I am calling it the “flipped-out do” because it is based off a technique I reveal in my BombshellBeauty Grand Collection. This one takes the technique to a whole new level, and the results are simply marvelous. I’ll be showing you variations you can do with the look as well in the next Newsletter edition of The Pretty Society- so be on the look for it for those of you who are signed up!

OMG There’s A Kitty In My Bento Box!

May 19, 2009

…And it is adorable, too!

So this morning turned out to be an especially lovely morning since I had the pleasure of catching up with an old friend from middle school. It’s been ages since we last saw each other and we had such a grand time remembering old stories and filling each other in with the new ones.

This is one awesome lady-so awesome in fact that she brought me a present! And what an adorable one it is, too, look at this gorgeous bento box! I am so in love with it!

Yes, there is a kitty inside my bento box! And I love it- what an adorable way to cover up the fork, ha ha. Let’s look at it up close:

The first box has a little divider that slides so you can adjust it as need be. I think this is such a fabulous accessory and my new favorite toy.

Those who know me know my obsessions (most anything cute and elegant with kitties or alice in wonderland). This definitely makes my list.

Now I’ll be ready for nom nom treats in an adorable and fashionable manner- how fabulous is this?

Nails That Rock: Dipped In A Pot Of Gold

May 14, 2009

Here’s a nail polish that is sure to inspire glamor as gold decadence makes a new appearance. Dip your nails into this pot of gold for some serious glitter and shine.

I was making a quick stop at the local drug store when I saw the bottle- I didn’t even know what it was at first, the golden circles were so shiny in it’s little bottle. The bottle’s design was familiar, but a shine like that inside was something unique.

This is MAYBELLINE’s “Pot Of Gold” Nail Polish and it is truly fabulous. It is a clear base that is loaded with both giant circles of glitter as well as hints of the tiny subtle kind we are more used to seeing. It spreads on very smoothly, and depending on how many coats or how much nail polish you decide to put on- the results can be subtle or immense.

I had to go for the full on look just to see how far it would take me. I love the look of the bottle and couldn’t resist getting my nails to match it.

In the future, I think this will be a nice top coat to any color- even a nude shade, for a subtle added texture and shine. There is a lot of room for versatility with this one.

Golden glamor nails that rock- oh you can be sure of that! How marvelous would these nails look with a golden vintage charm like the ones from yesterday’s post? A nice matching possibility- gorgeous.

Absolutely Charming, Absolutely Decadent

May 13, 2009

I love a charm with a secret, and when the glamorous touches of vintage are involved a beautiful look is created. The latest from this charming collection are ones to love:

I adore LOVEMADDS, and when I was looking through her latest collections my eyes were instantly drawn to the Samantha necklace- a pendant case complete with a vintage manicure set. This is a necklace with a secret! I love how vibrant the red is on the handles of the set- so bold and bright yet hidden in the delicate golden case dangling on a gold strand. Beautiful!

It is feminine, delicate on the outside and powerfully armed on the inside- very real and glamorous in presentation. This is something I would love to have dangling around my neck.

Ah, the charm of charms… aren’t they lovely?

They inspire us with past memories and create a place for new ones to come.

I’ve been loving the decadence of gold jewelry this year, and with bold pieces like these they just scream rich and luxury. The details are right and ready to be worn.

I can see single piece bold charms making a great appearance especially towards the later part of the year- with a simple cocktail dress, a large and magnificent golden charm delicately resting from the neck makes a beautiful and fashionable statement.

These golden charms also make for a lovely touch to a casual day outfit- adding the extra elegance and femininity to make a casual outfit all the more inspiring.

Don’t you just love these new pieces? There are even more gorgeous items in her collection you will have to see for yourself.
