Brown: A Neutral Earthy Color For Fashion

December 26, 2010

Whenever I wear the color brown, nature like items come to mind. I think of the fall in the cooler temperatures, and I think about the flowers when spring comes around. Brown can be elegant and sophisticated, and it can also be whimsical, young, and playful. I tend to think of more serious looks when it comes to fall and winter, saving my more playful items for spring; but I recently found a dress that is a good mix of both worlds.

First of all, I love the texture. This controlled crinkled fabric is beautiful and adds a great character and charm to the dress. The soft beige bow keeps the look elegant and balances out the texture of the fabric. It is feminine and delicate- showing both youthful factors but in a very elegant manner.

In the fall and winter months, you can wear a dress like this with a beautiful coat or cape (or in my case, I decided to wear it with a vintage fur wrap since the neutral earthy tones went so well together), gloves, and maybe some more heavy decadent jewelry (I’m thinking gems here). Or you can wear it in the spring with a cream or white cardigan and sandals. The dress will look very different and have two very different attitudes. I love how neutral tones are really open to inserting your own personality.

This particular dress has subtle golden sparkles within the fabric, adding another feminine touch. I like to wear warm golden colors with brown. I think it looks more elegant, more rich.

When it comes to neutral shades, I like to wear my beige and cream tones in a more dainty delicate manner- really playing into the neutral shade. I like to wear soft make up, beige or delicate shoes (nothing chunky, unless it is a nude color that plays into the dress) and keep my jewelry very delicate as well. With brown I feel more experimental- more decadent. I’ll put my hair in an updo, I’ll have heavier make up, I’ll add heavier accessories and make the look more adult (as opposed to a doll child-like look, more grown up). How do you like to wear your neutral shades?

Shoe Lust: Heels To Fall For

May 6, 2010

I’ve been doing a little window shopping which somehow always leads me to finding new shoes. Ones to dream about, ones to match dresses to, and then ones that amaze you in price. At least that has been the case for me. Wow, have I found some killer heels that are no-guilt when it comes to meeting your budget!

FIRST: The Under $50

KVOLL is a brand that is new to me on yesstyle.com. I just ordered a pair (not pictured here, I want to surprise you when they come in!) to get a feel for their style and quality. Now, for the price they are currently listed at… it is pretty impossible to resist. They are adorable! I’ll let you know what I think once my shoes arrive. Right now, I’m just excited about the look of them.

You can find out more about each shoe pictured in this post by clicking the image of the shoe. Prices are always subject to change but at the time of writing this post, the two shown above are only $35. Yep!

COCOEVE is a brand I have purchased from in the past with wonderful results. Their darling and fashion forward designs have always caught the attention of shoe admirers when I am wearing them. The shoes pictured just above and below are both from Cocoeve. Aren’t they fabulous?

The ones above are prefect for any occasion, and the gold chains add an extra fabulous factor. The color tone is soft and elegant, but the design gives it that extra it factor.

The red little darlings below have me going “awe” each time I look at them. I just purchased a darling little red dress and I keep thinking these shoes, with their cute little bow, would be an adorable combination.

Okay! Next up….

The Over $50 and Under $100

Just in the next price level, these are shoes that have that dream-like quality.

MIZ SHOES: First of all, love the color. I’ve been getting more dresses in this exact shade even. The design is dainty and feminine and has that high fashion look. It reminds me of something that would have just stepped off the runway. These are beautiful, and they also come in black. Black may be a classic, but I vote for the color on this one.

STYLEKELLY: Keeping in the feel of spring and summer, these are a pretty and girlie and elegant shoe for any lady of fashion. The ruffles are eye catching but not over the top, and the dainty bow is just precious. I like the color here as it is perfect for the nude and lighter shade dresses. A floral dress could go great here, too. I’m loving the look of these!

LA FRESHA: From pretty and delicate to bold and fierce, these heels let people know you are serious! I have many shoes from LA FRESHA in my closet and wear them regularly-they are comfortable, look fabulous, and so far have been holding up well. I can wear my shoes pretty hard from time to time, so something that can keep up with me is important.

This has a gladiator or armor type look to them. They are unique and definitely statement makers. Color wise they stay to a simple black with gold accents, but look at this design. An elegant toe and then an edgy ankle, what a combination. I really like the way the ankle cuff is large and fitted, but also has a large cut in the back so it doesn’t swallow up your ankle completely. You want the skin to show to keep the form flattering. This is a serious shoe I have my eyes on- love it!

Ah… I love looking at shoes. Well these are the ones giving me new inspirations; I’ll be sharing some of my recent favorites I’ve been wearing with you over the next week. Stay tuned!

The Little Red Dress

May 4, 2010

This spring and summer is all about mixing nudes with a splash of color. The little black dress may be a classic but what about the little red one?

When the design is simple and classic, dare to add some bold color! The trick with color is to find a balance, you don’t want to over do it. Keep the contras in balance with soft natural tones and controlled splashes of color (as in this case, very light clean make up paired with a bold red dress and red lipstick to match).

The same could be done with a pink or yellow, only in the case of yellow keep your lipstick a peachy tone or play with a hot pink. Find your color and go for it with a classic design. This dress pictured here is a pleated tube dress from KENZI on yesstyle.com. You can view more styles from Kenzi on YES STYLE by clicking below.

A design so simple that stands out from color gives you a lot of options. On its own it is fabulous, but when you mix in accessories it becomes an entirely new look. This dress can be worn simple for the earlier afternoon, and then can be glamed out in the evening with some black tights, accessories, and an elegant updo. Of course, in all of these styling ideas you must maintain a balance.

For this look, I kept my make up simple with soft skin tones for a glowy and natural look. KATE has some great colors that leave a clean and flawless finish, but also goes on smoothly.

I just started using them recently and have been happy with the results. Sometimes eye shadows are flaky and don’t cover, or worse they cover too much and leave a mess. So far these have been treating me nicely, and it feels light on the skin which I like.

MAKE UP BY KATE

I am going to have to try their lipstick and lip glosses next. I wanted to start with the eye shadows to get a feel for quality and I am thrilled. Their mascara is really nice, too. I’ve been using it for a few weeks. It feels very silky, and though sweat-proof it is designed to come off gently with warm water. That’s something I am pretty cautious of, I don’t like anything too harsh. Even normal waterproof mascara is something I use only when I need to since it is rough on your eyelashes. We’ve got to keep them, soft, luscious, and long after all!

DALIA MACPHEE: Designer Dresses To Fall In Love With!

April 27, 2010

Yesterday morning I had the pleasure of modeling a dress for LA designer, Dalia Macphee. Beyond having such talent and a creative eye, she is wonderful and an absolute sweetheart. You can really see her passion in her work and in her presence.

Looking through her portfolio, it is easy to quickly fall in love with her designs. What I didn’t know was how amazing a price point she offers for these incredible styles. Watch the interview to find out more. I know I’ll be stopping by the department store and picking up a dress from her for my next special event. Colors, texture, and beautiful lines- everything I know I look for in a design, and now with a price without guilt. Even Hollywood actresses agree! These truly are red carpet designs.

Dreaming Of Elegant Silver Styles

April 18, 2010

(And An Elegant Side Braid…)

Spring is here and is filled with beautiful colors, pleasant pastels, pinks, nudes, and shimmers of silver. I like to play with the youthful attitude spring provides for us in our fashion by keeping looks simple, clean, and very fresh. This means in both our clothing items as well as our hair and make up.

Here I have kept the focus on two solid and bold colors: hot pink and silver. Everything else is natural, nude, and soft to build a pretty contrast without going over the top. Because the make up is so light and clean, save for the bold lipstick, I wanted to do something with my hair to break up the symmetry.

With a bubble style dress, tiered in this case, there is plenty of volume so I want to allow more for the feminine form through the limbs and neck, rather than the waist which is hidden. And so I swept all my hair to one side to make a simple and thick braid. When your hair is as thick as mine, you can also add some form by  making a curve to rest on your shoulders.

The dress is from designer TIAN MU of YESSTYLE.com. I purchased this some time ago and am enjoying it now in the sunny weather. The shine is mesmerizing and I love how the tiers go slightly longer in the back. If you wanted to make it form fitted then all you need to do is add a belt and change up the style completely. Gotta love that in a dress!

Pretty In Pink For Spring

April 2, 2010

Spring is here and pastels have returned to style. Nudes and light pink shades are especially very nice this season. My latest find is a very pink and girlie number that is… well, as girlie as it gets! With a beautiful mix of textures, layers, and even a beautiful pair of shoes to match- this is a spring feminine dream.

DRESS: SHY SHY Set-Sequined Tulle Camisole + Satin Tulle Hem Slipdress

SHOES: STYLE LINE Open-Toe Platform Stilettos

Both these pieces are available from YESSTYLE. The shoes are available in a few different colors, and as tempting as the classic black pumps are, I had to go for the pink and push the girlie factor with this whimsical dress.

Just look at all the elements going on here. Sequins, satin, a frilly skirt and mix of textured layers all come together with the single light pink color base. The shoes keep the color a solid look and add an extra girlie touch with a heart shaped charm. With girlie numbers like this, spring has a lot to offer us this year.

These shoes have a nice cushioned feel to them and the design is very playful. Color aside, check out the detail of this zipper design and heart shaped charm finish:

A classic high heeled peep-toe shoe gets a whole new look with a zipper accenting line and charm in the back. In any color, these shoes rock!

I actually have a few pink dresses and tops in the same shade and am looking forward to matching them with my new heels. But this dress takes the show, it’s just darling and perfect!

What colors are grabbing you this spring?

Dreams Of Golden Flowers

March 31, 2010

When it comes to accessories, a floral theme is a favorite of mine. Whether done with brilliant colors or kept simple with one tone, but done extravagantly, you can be certain I will be there.

This particular necklace was a lovely find from one of those shops that feels like a warehouse when you walk in. You know the kind, they have an overwhelming selection with the same item in multiple colors and a price point you can hardly walk away from.

But this one was on its own and hidden away as if forgotten. It may have been an inexpensive find, but that doesn’t keep it from being fabulous. I love mixing my styles, from designer items to whatever the world brings. Some of my most unique accessories have been one dollar items found in antique shops. You never know where style will find you.

What I love about this one is how large it is and how lovely the flowers are arranged. Even the giant golden links add a bit of character. The matching earrings are a pure happy bonus!

You have the large golden petals holding little gems keeping the design in full. It just feels right. Because the necklace is such a statement piece, I like to wear it with something simple and black. A classic little black dress worn with these accessories makes you ready for anything. Simply beautiful.

My cat, Aveline, seems to approve, too- lol. She had to sneak herself in. I’ve purchased several new (and stunning) shoes from YESSTYLE which I will be showing you in the next few days, and she has been inspecting them thoroughly. She’s a shoe kitty, but who could blame her. I’ll update you with the details and photos here soon!

What are some of your favorite inexpensive and unexpected finds for accessories? I would love to hear your finds as well!

Kimono Satin Sleeve Luxury

March 2, 2010

Those who know me well know that I love fashion that is bigger than life. The bigger the sunglasses, the bigger the watch- I love it and am there. And I love volume. All of course within a balance, but that is what makes fashion so great. So in this case with my latest find from designer Nabi on yesstyle.com- Gigantic sleeves? Oh, yes you better believe it.

Flower Print Kimono Sleeve Satin Dress From Nabi

The fabric flows feeling like silk against the skin and is covered in a bold black and white print. On such giant flowing sleeves such as these, you have an animated and bold look. This print with the volume of the sleeves gives a fresh style making you ready for any soiree.  A belt has been designed to come through the middle without disrupting the sleeves, allowing them to move fully and show their gigantic form. The dress looks killer both with and without the belt; the belt just adds a slight bit more structure.

It is kinda like a mix between a kimono dress and butterfly wings, lol. I love this movement and the angles the sleeves form even when the dress is perfectly still. It is a statement piece that looks elegant on its own, ready for any event.

I also like how the length is kept short so you can really focus in on the sleeves. If it was long and full, the sleeves would just blend in unnoticed. Instead, this gives you a jagged edge on either side, which looks great when you are walking and the sleeves are in motion. Since they are thin they pick up the slightest breeze nicely, giving you animated volume in each step. Simply beautiful!

Nabi translates into “me” and “free” and is inspired by traditional and international fashion, bringing great new styles and welcoming prices. I like what has been done here with this dress as it is an instant statement piece.  I have my eyes on a couple of other items from Nabi and look forward to seeing what else becomes available.

All About The Tulle Look

February 23, 2010

Tulle anybody? I am all about this look. This is a style purely focusing on the fabric; it moves, has natural layers which shift from smooth to ruffled, and is sheer with texture.

Very feminine in appearance alone, when this fabric is worn on its own in a manner like this tulle dress/skirt from FOXCiTY you can really see it take over. A belt will add a cinched waist to this look and give it a new feel, but honestly I like the fabric left alone to move on its own free will. It is gorgeous.

As usual, when something has an option to be worn as a dress or a skirt I tend to lean to the dress side of things first. I plan on wearing the item as a skirt hear in the near future (I even have a top picked out for it and everything) but for right now a dress it is!

Just look at how those layers from the slip underneath emphasize the tulle on top. It is sheer feminine beauty of a fabric!

On the top you can see some hints of ruffles which gives the tulle some extra layered movement. This design adds volume and texture while remaining very elegant and simple.

And because it is so feminine and dainty, I thought I would mix things up a bit and add some grunge factor with these boots from LA FRESHA.

A pair of dainty heels would make this dress ready for a nice party in an instant. But the rocker style boots give it more of an elegant, casual, and edgy factor that works well for regular things throughout the day. With the cool weather, add a coat and you have an elegant look with some attitude.

If you want to see more shoe styles from LA FRESHA you can click here to view them. I’m a fan of their style as well as comfort. They have some great heels to dress up any look.

I’m really liking the mix right now. With something so simple it truly is a classic. The black dress is all about form and how you chose to wear it. Whether it is fitted or voluminous it is a style of its own in how you decide to wear it.

Something like this could be worn differently and look like a completely different outfit each time. From a loose dress, to a long dainty skirt, to a dress with a fitted waist when accompanied by a belt. Enter in layers and accessories and your playing power increases even more. Not to mention the shoe factor.

Tulle is a lovely fabric with lots of opportunities. Are you all about the tulle look?
